The Ritual

Keep the sunnah — before prayer and every day

The miswak ritual is more than oral care. It is worshipful routine: cleansing the mouth before wudu, honouring a sunnah the Prophet ﷺ loved, and caring for your health with intention.

1

Prepare

Wet the bristles with water. No toothpaste needed, though you can add it if you prefer.

2

Brush mindfully

Use gentle, circular motions. Let the silica and miswak fibers do the work. No need to press hard.

3

Take your time

Spend at least 2 minutes. Reach all surfaces: outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of each tooth.

4

Rinse and reflect

Rinse your mouth and brush. Take a moment to appreciate the clean, fresh feeling.

Using a Traditional Miswak Stick

The original miswak stick offers a deeper connection to the ancient practice. Here's how to use it:

  1. Peel back about 1cm of bark from one end
  2. Chew the exposed wood until it softens into bristles
  3. Use the bristled end to brush your teeth
  4. Trim off used bristles and repeat when needed

Many Muslims use the miswak before prayer (salah) as part of the sunnah, making it a spiritual as well as physical cleansing.
